5 Responses to Video artists

Eve Sussman

I watched a clip of hers Called 89 seconds and It seemed to be set in a different time period of that what she wants you to perceive it as. It also seems like it is a candid video of a group of people just preparing for something with really no direct or single narrative. There was a huge dog resting in the one side of the camera’s view that was laying on his back, that is what I noticed first while viewing this piece. It was odd but intriguing at the same time I am compelled to to view more of her short films and pieces now.

Fred Forest
From investigating more of his work online he seems to have been a very successful artists winning different awards. I can not understand fully what is going on in some of his pieces for they are in french in his different films he has produced but they are still interesting. I also read some he was a cofounder of the sociological Art Collective and The aesthetics of Communication movement.

Jan Svankmajer

Her short films include stop motions that feature creepy porcelain dolls that all have a peculiar theme or darkness to them including the first one I watched Alice (1988). In the end the doll turns into a real life girl aka Alice from Alice in Wonderland. I enjoy this person’s work a lot because I enjoy stop motion films including ones people still make today which are common among social media especially on Youtube.

Valie Export

I watched a short film of hers called Invisible Adversaries and there were shocking and uncomfortable scenes that made me want to look away. I also noticed most of her work dates back to the 70’s while most of it seems to of been in the 80’s so her work for the time must have been pretty controversial and far out to the typical norm of what someone would expect or see in a normal day before many new uses of technology, blogs or social media etc. I also read she is an australian artists with her medium being film and short clips while some of them were several minutes long.

Joan Jonas

She is an american Visual video artist who seems to touch on specific topics some being more political than others such as feminism and women's rights which seemed to be one of her main focus along with different clips and videos that include drawings. I really find her work fascinating including the pieces she makes regarding the short films themselves.

The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction

This source discusses the background of photography and lithography. I also noticed it is a scholarly source as well. They seem to contrast the two by comparing the two mediums. A point the argument makes is that reproductions lack one key element that the original possess's, its presence in time and its unique existence. Some people may say anything other but the original piece of work is a rip off of it. The author goes into depth talking about human senses through history and different periods.  I feel in a mechanical age there tends to be a fine line of what is art and what is just a product for a consumer to buy.

American sugar sale article response

The article discusses the advertising the sales of large companies sugar/snacks sales, for example limited edition pop-tarts. I feel no matter how much money and advertising is put into it is probable that it won't change the way American's diet/consume sugar. It does not have to necessarily be bad thing because everyone has different eating habits and looks on the food industry. Personally I feel as being a college student there is more of a movement to try to eat healthy to occasionally indulge and treat yourself to a sweet is not a bad thing. I often try to drink more water then I do soda because That in itself is really not good for you if consumed on the daily.

response

For someone who is not really into politics like myself this is a documentary that could still be found mildly interesting and worth watching. It discusses and gives an opinion about the world through the use of mass media. Apparently this documentary was based on two books which is something I would be interesting in reading.

Visual Studies Computers: Hmwrk #2

Visual Studies Computers: Hmwrk #2: Ethics of Digital Manipulation Read and Respond...

I feel the author makes an interesting point on when is digital manipulation going to far and deceiving people. However I feel in the generation we are growing up in we have a good eye when knowing when things are enhanced and edited. This happens in all the time in advertisements which is probably the most common we see in our everyday lives. I feel it is essential to know have a sense of when knowing from what is real and what is fake especially in our modern day world.

Visual Studies Computers: Hmwrk #1

Visual Studies Computers: Hmwrk #1: Read and respond on your blog to the article linked: My So-Called Opinions

In my opinion pluralism is a social construct in which we need to maintain a modern society. Especially in the technology world in which we live. Diversity is important for example, on a college campus.

The skyscrapers and and city lights along with the big office buildings were beautiful, and first time walking through the inner city. The last time I was downtown was in Philly was when I got Philly cheesesteaks with my parents last summer. I look forward to seeing more of the city and experiencing Temple.
