5 Responses to Video artists

Eve Sussman

I watched a clip of hers Called 89 seconds and It seemed to be set in a different time period of that what she wants you to perceive it as. It also seems like it is a candid video of a group of people just preparing for something with really no direct or single narrative. There was a huge dog resting in the one side of the camera’s view that was laying on his back, that is what I noticed first while viewing this piece. It was odd but intriguing at the same time I am compelled to to view more of her short films and pieces now.

Fred Forest
From investigating more of his work online he seems to have been a very successful artists winning different awards. I can not understand fully what is going on in some of his pieces for they are in french in his different films he has produced but they are still interesting. I also read some he was a cofounder of the sociological Art Collective and The aesthetics of Communication movement.

Jan Svankmajer

Her short films include stop motions that feature creepy porcelain dolls that all have a peculiar theme or darkness to them including the first one I watched Alice (1988). In the end the doll turns into a real life girl aka Alice from Alice in Wonderland. I enjoy this person’s work a lot because I enjoy stop motion films including ones people still make today which are common among social media especially on Youtube.

Valie Export

I watched a short film of hers called Invisible Adversaries and there were shocking and uncomfortable scenes that made me want to look away. I also noticed most of her work dates back to the 70’s while most of it seems to of been in the 80’s so her work for the time must have been pretty controversial and far out to the typical norm of what someone would expect or see in a normal day before many new uses of technology, blogs or social media etc. I also read she is an australian artists with her medium being film and short clips while some of them were several minutes long.

Joan Jonas

She is an american Visual video artist who seems to touch on specific topics some being more political than others such as feminism and women's rights which seemed to be one of her main focus along with different clips and videos that include drawings. I really find her work fascinating including the pieces she makes regarding the short films themselves.
